Tallgrass Brewing Co. - IPA
This is a special review for me. A couple months ago on twitter I stumbled upon the Tallgrass Brewing Co. out of Manhattan, Kansas. I then sent them a playful tweet wishing I could taste some of their beer. Obviously, Tallgrass is not sent to Pennsylvania or I wouldn’t have asked. Not only did Tallgrass Brewing Co. send in four of their flagship beers, Tallgrass’ founder Jeff Gill sent...

Caldera Brewing Co. Rose Petal Imperial Golden Ale
Today I decided to open I bottle I bought just yesterday. We’re looking at the Caldera Brewing Company’s Kettle Series Rose Petal. It’s an Imperial Blonde that’s brewed with rose petals and added Bulgarian Rose Water. It’s a beautiful beer to look at. Pours crystal clear with a glowing golden tone. Head pours healthy and then fades to a thing foam. Really...

I'm Back with 3 Floyds Robert The Bruce!
Greetings! I am back. Now, I haven’t blogged in quite some time. This is mainly due to laziness and lack of motivation. Alas, I recently came across some hard-to-get-in-Philly gems that have turned my attitude around.  Before I begin the review, I have to give a huge shout-out to my good friend Greg. About a month ago now Greg took a roadtrip out to the midwest and just happened to stop in...

Huppendorfer - Heller Kathrein-Bock
Today’s review comes to you from the Brauerei Johannes Grasser in Konigsfeld Germany. Interested story on how I obtained this beer actually: I bought this at the Pliny the Younger tasting I went to at the Blue Dog in Chalfont, PA. The owner of the Blue Dog told us the story that the distributors, the Shelton Brothers, basically got sick of the beers that they were distributing and decided...

Dogfish Head - Aprihop
Today’s review is a special beer for me. It comes to you from Dogfish Head in Milton, Delaware. Aprihop is Dogfish’s “fruit beer for people who hate fruit beers” as Sam Calagione aptly puts it. I first tasted this beer at the Dogfish Head event at Earth Bread and Brewery in Philadelphia and was blown away by it. On to the beer: Aprihop is an American IPA that clocks in...

Founders Brewing CO - Harvest Ale
Okay, so if you’ve ready any of my few posts thus far you know that I’m a huge fan of the Founders Brewing Co. Quite possibly my favorite brewery out there. So in keeping with my weird/creepy/obsessive love of Founders, tonight we’re going to look at their Harvest Ale. Founders Harvest Ale is an American Pale Ale that’s wethopped. ‘Wethop’ means that the beer...

Unibroue - La Fin Du Monde
So today we’re taking a look at the ever-so-popular La Fin Du Monde by Unibroue out of Chambly, Quebec.  La Fin Du Monde (from now to to be referred to as ‘Fin’) is a Belgian-style Triple Golden Ale. For those that don’t know, ‘tripel’ refers to the amount of times a beer is fermented. This one being three times. It yields generally a higher ABV (9% in this...

Founders Brewing Co - Imperial Stout
The first review tonight is Founders Imperial Stout: Decided to crack this bad boy open whilst waiting for my La Fin Du Monde to chill. Presentation is a typical 12 oz founders bottle poured into an 8 oz tulip glass. It clearly has labeled on it 10.9% ABV and 90 IBU’s. It pours an extremely viscous motor oil leaving considerable head that sticks around for the whole ride. No light...

Stone - 13th Anniversary (aged too long)
Okay. So this is a review where the beer is good and my judgement was poor. The beer that we’re looking at is a Stone 13th Anniversary that was supposed to be enjoyed in 2009 but wasn’t until March of 2010. Now, I was ignorant that this beer was supposed to be enjoyed early in 2009 much less 2010 but at the same time, I knew that it was 9.5% abv and thought, “hey, it’s high...

Great Lakes Brewing Co. - Blackout Stout
I’m super excited for this review. Ever since seeing Two Guys On Beer’s review of the impossible to find Great Lakes Brewing Co. Bourbon Barrel Aged Blackout Stout I had to get my hands on at least the regular Blackout. Luckily, it was just released and I was able to pick up a four-pack at the Blue Dog Bar in Chalfont, PA. Stolen from the Great Lakes web site: “Named after the...

Russian River - Pliny the Younger
So this past Saturday, I was able to get my hands on arguably the number 1 most sought after beer in the world: Russian River’s Pliny the Younger. First, a little bit of backstory: I had found out through some channels that Capones in Norristown PA would be holding a tasting even starting at 11:00 AM. I woke up at 7 AM, did a lot of quick shoveling from the mini blizzard from the night...

Founders - Backwoods Bastard
Tonight’s review comes to you again from the Founders Brewing Company. This is on their Backwoods Bastard. The Info: Backwoods Bastard is Scotch Ale that is aged in Oak bourbon barrels. It’s IBU’s clocks in at 50 and it’s 10.2% abv. Needless to say, this guy is a sipper. This beer pours a deep red/amber color. I had to pour it aggressively to get any head on it but...

Dogfish Head event at Earth Bread and Brewery
So last night I decided to brave Snowicane 2010 to head on over to Earth Bread + Brewery because I heard though social media that Dogfish Head was holding and even there and that Sam would be there. The roads weren’t nearly as bad as they are today but if you know anything about Chestnut Hill in Philly, you know it’s already a terrible place to drive. Anyway, I arrived at Earth, which I had been...

Chatoe Rogue - First Growth Dirtoir Black Lager
Greetings! Today’s review comes to you from Oregon by the wonderful people at Rogue. The beer we are reviewing is from their First Growth series. It’s the Dirtoir Black Lager. I purchased this beer at Blue Dog Pub in Lansdale, PA. This series is made with Rogue’s own hops and barley, specifically Independent and Revolution Hops, and Risk Malts. This beer is BEAUTIFUL. These...

BrewDog/Stone Brewing - Bashah
Today I am going to take a gander at the collaborative effort between Stone and BrewDog, Bashah. I purchased this beer at Capones on 2/17/10 for $9. First some background on this beer: It is a Black Belgian Double IPA. This bad boy clocks in at 8.6% abv. BrewDog blogged about the whole experience working with Stone; definitely worth the read. Bashah pours a very dark amber, almost black at...

Founders - Nemesis 2009
Welcome to the first official PhillyBeerSnob post! Just to reiterate, I am not a professional by any means. I know what I like and what I don’t like and I like to talk about beer. Anyway, on to the beer! My first review is the Founders Nemesis 2009. I purchased it at Capones on 2/17/10. It was about $9 if I remember correctly. It’s a maple bourbon barrel aged wheat wine. Yeah I...
